Marion "Sweet" Newquist

Sweet Newquist, age 95, born and raised in Smithville, Texas ended her earthly journey on March 13, 2022 at Christopher House in Austin. She was born at home on November 11, 1926 to Curtis Warner Moore and Wilma Dee Moore. Her parents and her sister, Wilma Lucille, preceded her in death.

Being a devoted Smithville Tiger, Westlake Chaparral and Texas Longhorn fan, she was always looking forward to football season. She would sit in her recliner for hours watching one game after another, many times letting us know they weren't playing up to her expectation! She loved watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren participate in all their sports activities. To say her family was her life is an understatement.

She was working as a nurse at the clinic on Main Street when she saw Lee Roy, the love of her life, walking down the street. She told the nurse working with her that she didn't know him but that she was going to marry him... ... ... and she did. She often joked that she chased him for a year before "catching" him. They were married on December 26, 1950. They raised three daughters and there was never a dull moment with three girls in the house. Together, Sweet and her mom, affectionately known as Big, sewed MANY prom dresses. She was an exceptionally talented seamstress and designed and crocheted numerous baby blankets and afghans, each one more beautiful than the last. It gave her great pleasure to present them to family and friends.

Sweet was a reserved, rather shy lady who always put others before herself. She was the model servant, always dong for others and avoiding the spotlight. True to form, she requested that her service be short and sweet.

During her last days at the Christopher House, she often spoke of her church, First Christian Church in Smithville. She felt a very close bond with her church family who always treated her with unwavering respect, kindness and love.

Preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Lee Roy Newquist, Sweet is survived by her daughters, Donna Dunlap, Pam Vasek and her husband Bob, and Nita Bogdanski. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, Wendi McKenzie and her husband Kip, Brian Vasek and his wife Audra, Blain Vasek and his wife Melinda, Brooke Steidl and her husband Brad, and Kevin Bogdanski. Her great-grandchildren, Morgan and Hannah McKenzie, Colton, Connor, Kendall, and Kelsey Vasek, Wyatt and Wesleigh Steidl, and Marlee Bogdanski are thankful for all the joyous celebrations spent with their beautiful Meme. They find comfort knowing she is now at peace with her Lord and Savior.

A graveside service to honor Sweet will be held at 2:00pm on Thursday, March 17, 2022 at Oak Hill Cemetery in Smithville, Texas.
