Johnny Schroeder

Johnny Schroeder, 90, of Smithville, Texas passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 7, 2022. Johnny was born in Lee County on February 26, 1932, the son of Richard and Selma Schroeder.

He proudly served from 1953 to 1955 in the United States Army. Johnny married the love of his life, Annie Louise Franke on April 17, 1955, in Winchester, Texas. Johnny and Ann were blessed to have shared soon to be 67 years of marriage. To this marriage they brought three children: Johnnie and wife, Tammy of Smithville, Texas and Danny and wife Brenda of Smithville, Texas.

Johnny was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Selma Schroeder, His father & mother-in-law – Trougott and Tillie Franke, Sisters, Annie Mae Kubsch, Mildred Schultz, brother Ed Schroeder and daughter Susan Wilkins and brother-in-law James Franke.

Johnny was the proud grandfather of, Rachael Gamboa, Jessica Mueller, Michelle Montgomery, David Bienek ,Logan Schroeder, Tony Bennett and Wendall Bennett, 16  Great Grandchildren and one Great Great Grandchild, numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by one brother Marvin Schroeder, and two sister’s – Eleanor Schultz and Gladys Tramp. Brother-in-law RC Franke, two sisters-in-law Charlene Franke, Iris Franke,  and one son-in-law  Jim Wilkins.

He moved his family to Smithville, Texas where he was a successful businessman and dedicated many years to the community.

Johnny enjoyed serving his community and donated his time in ways that he knew could truly help make a difference whether it was serving on the SISD School Board, serving his Church and many civic organizations. He proudly served the Smithville Volunteer Fire Dept. where he was an active member for 30 years. This was an organization he was very passionate about.

Johnny was a true family man in every sense of the word. He was a devoted husband, father and friend but one of his favorite titles was Pappa. Outside of family, Johnny enjoyed many friendships which he had made over the years while operating Schroeder’s Bait Shop. He could often be seen sitting at the Bait Shop with a cup of coffee waiting on the next friend to stop in and catch up on all of the fishing stories.

His hobbies included deer hunting, fishing no matter what time of day or nite, hot domino games , tending to his garden and spending time with family and friends.


Visitation will be from 5:00pm to 7:00pm on Moday, April 11, 2022 at Marrs Jones Funeral Home. The funeral home is located at 110 American Legion Road in Smithville, Texas.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00am on Tuesday, April 12, 2022 at Grace Lutheran Church. The church is located at 308 Byrne Street in Smithville, Texas.

Graveside services and Burial will follow at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Smithville, Texas.


In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Grace Lutheran Church, The Smithville Fire Department or a charity of your choice in memory of Johnny Schroeder.
