Bonnie Susen

December 31, 1933 — April 18, 2022

Bastrop, TX

Bonnie Alice English Susen was born December 31, 1933 (everyone celebrates her birthday) in McDade, Texas to Joseph and Sarah Hills English. Her siblings included Edna Mae, Pearl, Verna Ruth, Ome Mae, Billy, Robert, Charles. As a child, she moved to Bastrop where she attended school and graduated from Bastrop High School in 1951. She then married the same year and moved to Smithville. There she raised a family: Alfred Dale, Larry, Kenneth, Bruce, Richard, and Janet.

In 1970, she became a single parent, raising 6 children. She worked various jobs to keep a home and put food on the table including cleaning homes and businesses, working as a clerk in a grocery store, mowing yards, being a teacher's aide for 14 years, waitressing, selling tupperware and Beeline clothing. With the help of her kids, they contributed money from mowing yards and Larry and Kenneth's job working weekends at Ray's cafe. There they worked for their meals at $2.50 a day. She also cleaned the telephone office in town but for 2 years, her sister-in-law, GaNelle, worked for her giving her the money that she made.

When Janet graduated, her life changed. She was 50 years old and moved to Clute, Texas where she cleaned at the chemical plants and then homes for 10 years. She then moved back to Smithville and worked at IBM and Dell Computers in Austin. When she finally decided to retire, she thought of traveling, but her plans did not pan out. She moved into her apartment that included free maintenance, however, she missed mowing lawns. So, she received a lawn mower for Christmas and was proud she could still mow lawns again.

Bonnie took on a new hobby, she enjoyed having garage sales. She said that someone always had things they want to get rid of. She also had a hard time saying "no". Though it was hard work, she enjoyed seeing people and helping others, just like people had done for her. With the extra money, she could enjoy going out to eat and putting gas in her car. When she as in an accident, which totaled her car, she bought another car with her saved yard sale money. She wanted all to know that she had a hard life but it was a great one with God's help. He was always there for her. She wants everyone to know that with love and the Lord, you can have a good life no matter what obstacles stand in your way.

She enjoyed 10 grandchildren: Erica, Philip, Stephanie, Brooke, Christi, Ashley, Heather, Khristen, Shelby, and Cody. 18 great grandchildren which she loved all dearly. She ends her life with one regret and that is the father she gave her children. If anyone would like to share a story of remembrance of herm she would like that.
