William Mcglaun Sr.

September 9, 1948 — January 17, 2015

William Harvey (Bill) McGlaun, born September 9, 1948 in Conroe, Texas died January 17, 2015 at St. David's Hospital in Austin, Texas after a long illness at his home in Winchester. He is preceded in death by parents William H. and Christine (Welch) McGlaun. He is survived by two loving sons, Billy and Monty McGlaun, three grandchildren, Mason, Kaleb and Kenzie Shay, all of Smithville, Texas. He is also survived by three sisters: Sharon Ducharme, Bobbie Jeane Baker, June Garmon and six nieces and nephews; all of whom he made feel so loved and special. He is survived by Barbara (Allen) Curry, his life's love and companion, his best friend and greatest supporter. Bill would want to pay a special tribute to his long-time friend and mentor who always recognized and supported Bill's life achievements as a sculptor, Weldon (and Fran) Grange of Houston, Texas.

Bill's sculptures have been installed all over the world, including France, Japan, Indonesia, Italy and Scotland. His "Mourning Doves with Passion Flowers" was presented to the Pope and is on display at the Pope's Summer Palace in Italy. In addition, his pieces reside in Fort Lauderdale, Florida; The Museum of American History in Oklahoma; Texas A & M University; the Texas State Education Buildings in Austin, Louisiana, and Russellville, Arkansas. In 1986, Bill was honored as Sesquicentennial Sculptor by the Texas Sesquicentennial Committee. His tribute to the state is on display at the Texas State Capitol in Austin. His most recent sculpture, a 17 foot tall angel with an enormous wing span was dedicated to the fallen soldiers from Smithville who served in the armed forces.

Among condolences from Bill's many friends is a tribute from Stephanie which expresses the feelings shared by this family and this community: "Today we say goodbye to a very dear man, a good friend, fantastic father, and amazing artist. We pray Bill is blessed with an unending supply of clay to sculpt, perfect vision, nimble hands to achieve every detail, and angel wings to fly to the top of the tallest sculpture. A huge void is now left in our world."

Funeral services are Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at Marrs-Jones Funeral Home in Smithville, Texas with interment following at Winchester City Cemetery, Winchester, TX.
