Wayne D. "David" Johnson

San Antonio

Wayne D. (David) Johnson was born on September 16, 1932 in Hornbeak, Tennessee, the son of Lewis and Alliene Johnson. He died on February 3, 2024 in San Antonio, Texas. He is predeceased by his brothers, Robert, Garth and Harry, and his sisters, Beth and Ann. He is also predeceased by his son James David (Jimmy) Johnson and his wife of 56 years, Anna Rose Johnson. He is survived by his son, Michael Wayne Johnson and wife Connie, and daughter in law, Marilyn Johnson. He is also survived by his grandson, Gregory Wayne Johnson, granddaughter, Krystal Anne Johnson, great grandsons Michael Johnson and Rhys McKay. He is also survived by his brother, Jimmy Johnson, and sister, Rebecca Brandon.


David joined the U.S. Air Force upon his graduation from high school. While in the Air Force, he served in Japan during the Korean War, spent tours in England and Goose Bay, Labrador, along with several stateside assignments before leaving the Air Force after 12 years of service. He moved to Austin, Texas where he worked for the U.S. Postal Service for several years before going to work at Austin Title Company. David rose through the ranks at Austin Title to become  President of the company before retiring in 1986.


David was a lay minister for the Church of Christ and preached part time for numerous congregations over his lifetime. David and his wife Ann served with the “SoJourners” group from 1999-2010. During their years with the SoJourners, they traveled across the United States assisting Churches of Christ, Children’s homes, Christian colleges and serving the Lord.


David was known as an outstanding preacher who always delivered powerful, short sermons. He touched many lives over the years and was a faithful Christian all of his life. Quoting Apostle Paul from 2 Timothy: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.”


The family wishes to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers during the last couple of months. We also wish to thank Abundant Hospice Care for their comfort and care provided during David’s last few days.


Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 10th at the Smithville Church of Christ. Visitation with the family will be on Friday, February 9th, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the Marrs-Jones Funeral Home in Smithville, TX. 


In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
