Virginia Poitras

June 24, 1926 — October 14, 2017

Virginia M. Poitras was born June 24, 1926 in Santurce, PR to Rafael Morales Rosario and Julia Alvarez Maldonado.  She passed away peacefully on October 14, 2017, in Bastrop, TX.

Virginia was a child of the great depression. She was a survivor!  She was a very intelligent, a very determined and a very strong woman.  They broke the mold when she was born.  She worked hard for everything she achieved in life.  She began work for the Federal Government in Washington DC when she first came to the mainland USA in the early 1950s and remained a Federal employee for many years until she retired at NAS Pt. Mugu, in 1974.

She married the love of her life, Paul Poitras, in 1969.  Together they traveled the world and lived life to the fullest.  They were active in the community and members of many fraternal organizations such as the American Legion, the Elks, the Moose, and the VFW.

In her later years she joined the Red Hat Society and enjoyed many crafts and quilting classes. Her green thumb was famous. She raised beautiful Cymbidium orchids, roses, avocados, lemons, limes and oranges in her tiny little backyard. Perhaps you were the lucky recipient of one of her creations.

Virginia is preceded in death by her parents Rafael Morales and Julia Alvarez, her sister Hilda del Rio, her husband Paul Poitras, her step-daughter Paulette Carey and her niece Juanita Caballero.  She is survived by her four children, two step-daughters, sixteen grandchildren, twenty-one great-grandchildren and 5 great- great-grandchildren.

To friends and family she was Mrs. Puddy and she will be loved and remembered by her grandchildren as Grandma Puddy in perpetuity.  I think we’ll miss the Puddyisms most of all.  So many good belly laughs for her interpretation of the English language.  Eskka PEEs!! Co MIZZ arry!!  And my kids favorite, Ford F*kus!!  So many beautiful memories; picnics, beaches, camping, fishing, movies, and thrift store treasure hunts.

Oh my!  We’ll miss you Mrs. Puddy!!  We’re so happy you are dancing on that great big dance floor in the sky with your beautiful Paul!

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the hurricane Maria recovery in her name.  Celebration of life will be held in Ventura, CA in March 2018, Internment at Ivy Lawn.
