Sylvia Cox, 90, passed away on July 17, 2024, in Bastrop, Texas. Sylvia was born on April 26, 1934, in Rosanky, Texas to Irene and Rudolph Zimmerhanzel and was the youngest of five siblings. She happily lived the rest of her life in Smithville, Texas.
She began working at the early age of fourteen as a waitress. Her love of people and her outgoing personality made this one of her favorite jobs. Sylvia then graduated from high school in 1952. She then spent over thirty years working in the nonprofit and service industry, once again in service to others. She retired in 2003 after many years of hard work and dedication.
Syliva had many passions and lived life to the fullest. Anyone who knew her knew of her love for sports and bingo. She loved the Smithville Tigers, Houston Astros, the Houston Texans and really anthing that involved a ball and keeping score. She also loved spending time with her husband at their farm, enjoying barbeque cookoffs and watching her grandkids play sports.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Cox, mother, Irene Zimmerhanzel, father Rudolph Zimmerhanzel, her sister Olivia Mach, and her brothers August, Fred and Julius Zimmerhanzel. She is survived by her daughter, Susan Peacock, granddaughter Tina (Twyla) Bailey, grandson Jason (Nikki) Peacock and granddaughter Kimberly (Tyler) Cox, great grandkids, Landon, Aiden, Cooper, Blake, Reagan, Jaxon, Gavin and Emery and numerous nieces and nephews.
Sylvia was affectionately known as “Granny” not only by family, but to a lot of friends as well. This spoke to her nurturing and loving spirit. She always made everyone feel special and unconditionally loved. She was strong, smart, witty, and funny and will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Visitation will be Friday, August 2, from 5-7 P.M. at the Marrs-Jones Funeral Home Chapel, in Smithville TX. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, August 3, 2024, at the First Methodist Church, 400 Olive St., Smithville TX at 10:00 A.M., with the internment following at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Smithville, Texas.
