Patsy Greene Welch

July 9, 1933 — March 30, 2026

Smithville

Patsy Greene Welch passed away peacefully in her home on March 30, 2026, surrounded by family, at the age of 92 years young.

Patsy was born on July 9, 1933, in La Grange, Texas, to Laura and Albert Mach. She graduated from Smithville High School and shortly thereafter married James W. Greene. Together they raised four daughters, and the girls were their pride and joy. Patsy served as PTA president and was deeply involved in her children’s school and church activities. She was a jogger, participating in races all over the state and medaled in the Capitol 10K! In 1970 she began a longtime career at Smithville Savings and Loan, retiring in 1996. For many years she “manned” a baked potato booth at the Smithville Jamboree, a family and community tradition. The Greene Home was a welcoming gathering place for local teens.

In 1994 Patsy married James Welch, who shared a full and happy life with her until his passing in 2022. The couple loved camping and traveled to national parks in their RVs. Patsy and James were active members of Rosanky Baptist Church.

Patsy was an excellent cook and a gifted dancer — the jitterbug was her favorite — and “I Hope You Dance” was her song for living life. She loved home and family! As a mother she taught her daughters to laugh and smile! Quietly faithful to the scripture “The meek shall inherit the earth,” Patsy was never boastful, accepted people as they were, and lived without judgment. She was known for her tenacity and resourcefulness, thrifty by nature and a formidable negotiator.

Patsy leaves a legacy of kindness and generosity in her daughters, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by husbands James W. Greene and James Welch; sister, Vella Garrett; grandson Wade Mitchell; nephew Brandon Hoffman and son-in-law Ray Powers.
