With hearts full of love and gratitude for a life well lived, we celebrate the homegoing of Minnie Powell Bates, who peacefully entered eternal rest on Thursday, February 26,2026. Minnie was born on February 9, 1944, in Upton, Texas, to the late Rev. Lee Allen Powell and the late Ethel Mae Powell. Minnie was raised in the Church and accepted Christ at an early age. In her adult years, Minnie worked as a nurse's aide at Smithville Hospital. Minnie found a passion in caring for others. She had dreams of becoming a nurse but did not seek further education. She stepped out of the workforce to be a stay-at-home wife and mother, continuing her passion for caregiving for her family. Known lovingly as “Momma,” “My Ma,” and “Tulip,” she was the heart of her family. Everyone enjoyed coming to eat at Momma’s, as they loved her fried chicken, hamburgers, and pancakes with crispy edges. Minnie was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Thurman James Bates, and son Eric Bates. She leaves to cherish her precious memories: four sons, David Wayne Jackson (Carole), Donald Bates, Sr. (Betty), Stanley Bates, Larry Bates (Lisa), three daughters, Gracie Bates-Davis (David), Angela Bates, and Christie Bates; six grandchildren; two great grandchildren, one sister, Mary Louise Rogers; one brother, John Powell; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Though we mourn her earthly absence, we rejoice knowing that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:8). Her legacy of faith, love, strength, and service will continue to guide us.
“Well, done, good and faithful servant.” – Matthew 25:23
