Gladys Jewel Hardy Meuth of Rosanky, our loving Mother went home to be with the Lord at the age of 97 years on February 22, 2026. She often reflected that she had been blessed with a full and wonderful life, a happy marriage, and wonderful children. With a grateful heart, she cherished the family and memories that made her life so full.
Gladys was born July 3, 1928, to Vivian Hampton Hardy and Jewel Haynes Hardy in Olivia, Texas. The eldest of four daughters, she was born at the beginning of the Great Depression. Gladys attended Cordell Public Schools until the 10th grade and graduated from Edna High School in 1945. With a passion for teaching, she pursued higher education with relenting drive and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Southwest Texas State College in 1967 and received her Master’s Degree in Special Education from A&M University of Prairie View in 1979. She taught at various institutions, including Smithville ISD, Bastrop County Jail, and Rosanky Christian Academy, dedicating herself to her students’ education and empowerment. She was especially proud of her family’s legacy in education -- including her aunt, herself, her children, her grandchildren and even her great-grandchildren—all of whom answered the call to teach and shape young lives.
Gladys married Hugo Charles Meuth on June 2, 1947, in San Marcos, Texas. As a U.S. Airforce family they moved numerous times and returned to San Marcos in 1964. In 1969 they relocated to the family homestead in Rosanky, Texas. She was a loving and devoted wife for 58 years upon his passing in May of 2005. They had six children: Virginia, Douglas, Cathy, Stephen, Barbara, and Rosemary.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Hugo; daughter, Virginia Marie Mercer and son-in-law, Lee Chester Mercer; son Douglas Carl Meuth and daughter-in-law, Sandra Meuth; son-in-law, Edmond Tausch, III, grandchild, Brian Keith Tausch, and son-in-law Kenneth Niemann. Also preceding her in death were her sisters and brother-in laws, Dorothy and Willie Porche, Vivian and Jack Harney, Cecil and Billy Roberts.
Gladys loved quilting and embroidering and spent countless hours creating beautiful quilts and pillowcases, generously giving them to family. She was our family historian, creating books of old family letters and photo albums. She was a proud member of the Baron de Bastrop Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT). Her commitment to family and community was evident in her involvement in organizations, such as the Rosanky Community Center, 3-N-1 Volunteer Fire Department, String Prairie Community Center, Rosanky Baptist Church, and Rosanky Christian Academy. She was a dedicated public servant and volunteered as an election judge for many years in Rosanky, a role she carried out with integrity and caring. The impact of her devotion to the community remains apparent in Rosanky, Texas. The growth and development of the 3-N-1 VFD and Rosanky Baptist Church are lasting testaments to her selfless efforts.
She is survived by her caregiver and daughter Catherine Tausch of Rosanky; son Stephen Meuth and wife Gerri of Port Lavaca; daughter Barbara Niemann of Lockhart; daughter Rosemary Futschik and husband Floyd of Flatonia. Grandchildren: Samuel Mercer, Jewel Mercer, Marty (Brooke) Mercer, Robbie (Corey Brooks) Meuth, Douglas (Olivia) Meuth, David (Lindsey) Meuth, Amber Martin; Stephen K. (Angela) Meuth; Edmond W. (Shauwa) Tausch, Eydie (Jeff) Vallejo; Shari Niemann, Gary (Jodi) Niemann; Crystal (Blake) Ward, Charlie Futschik; many great-grandchildren, great-great children and numerous nieces and nephews.
