On July 13, 2018 Colonel George R. Givens passed away peacefully at home after a long battle with cancer. Colonel Givens had a 32 year long distinguished Army career. Randy always said that the highlights of his career were commanding an Attack Helicopter Troop and a Mechanized Infantry Battalion, and his service with MACVSOG 5th Special Forces Group near DeNang, Vietnam. His awards and commendations were numerous including two Bronze Stars for Valor and Meritorious Service, a Purple Heart for injuries received in Vietnam, the Army Commendation Medal, Humanitarian Service Award, the Legion of Merit Medal, the Army Presidential Unit Citation, and the Vietnam Gallantry Cross among others.
During his career he also earned a Bachelors degree in Landscape Architecture from LSU, a Masters degree in Sociology from Pacific Lutheran University, and attended the National War College in Washington DC. During his retirement Colonel Givens taught both Government and Sociology at the University of Texas at Brownsville and Blinn College.
Colonel Givens is survived by his wife of 47 years, Vicky, his two sons and two daughters, 10 grandchildren, one brother, and numerous nieces and nephews who all love him dearly.
The Givens family will have a visitation on Wednesday, August 1, 2018 between the hours of 12:00 Noon and 2:00PM at All Faiths of the Pines, Smithville, Texas.
The Funeral Service will be held the same day, Wednesday, August 1, 2018, at 2:00PM also at All Faiths of the Pines, Smithville, Texas.
There will be a Graveside Service for Colonel George R. Givens in San Antonio, Texas at Fort Sam National Cemetery, Thursday, August 2, 2018 starting at 11:00AM.
As a Retired Colonel, United States Army, Colonel George R Givens will be laid to rest with full military honors following the Graveside Services at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, Texas.
