Smithville

Fred Charles Barkley, Jr. was born June 22, 1933 at Old Seton Hospital in Austin, Texas  to Fred C. Barkley and Mary Starr Barkley.  He grew up in Austin, attaining his education at St. Mary’s Parochial, University Jr. High, Austin High School, the University of Texas, and the University of Mississippi, where he graduated with a Batchelor of Business Administration. He remained an avid Longhorn fan his whole life.

His career in Austin was in the financial industry, in securities with E.F. Hutton, and in real estate. Upon retirement, he moved to Smithville, Texas where he quickly became a fixture in the community, enjoying visits and dinners with his many friends. Fred enjoyed travel his entire life, visiting almost every state in the United States, and more exotic trips to Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore, Australia, the Fuji Islands, and Egypt to name just a few of his adventures. He loved reading, and history was his particular interest. He had a collection of books about Texas history, with two of the books authored by his mother: a history of Travis County and one of Seton Hospital.

He will be fondly remembered by his friends for his sense of humor, his infectious laugh, and his kindness to everyone. Fred was a true gentleman. Per his request, there will be no formal memorial service, but he will be memorialized forever in the hearts of all those whose lives he gently touched.
