Don Milton Mutschink, beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend; passed away on Sunday, May 31, 2026, at the age of 69.
Born on September 15, 1956, in Bastrop, Texas, Don spent his entire life deeply rooted in the community he loved. He was a lifelong resident of Smithville and a true pillar of the town, known by nearly everyone and loved by countless people. Whether through his service to the community, his friendships, or simply his larger-than-life personality, Don left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to cross his path.
Don was preceded in death by his father, Milton Mutschink.
He is survived by his loving wife of many years, Patricia Mutschink; his daughters, Jennifer Mutschink Zigal and Jamie Bienek; his sons-in-law, Kevin Zigal and David Bienek; his cherished grandchildren, Kamryn, Luke, Kyle, and Paige; his mother, Eleanor Mutschink; his two sisters Marlene Wallace and Carolyn Isabel; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear colleagues and friends.
Through Milton's Furniture, the family business that has served Smithville and the surrounding communities for more than 75 years, Don dedicated his life to serving others. He took great pride in helping families furnish their homes, and there is likely a piece of Don in countless homes across the area. To Don, the business was never just about selling furniture; it was about building relationships, helping neighbors, and supporting the community that had supported his family for decades. He was deeply grateful to every customer who walked through the doors of Milton's Furniture. His impact on Smithville can be measured by the friendships he formed and the lives he touched along the way.
While Don carried out many roles—his most important roles were those he held within his family. Above all else, Don was a devoted husband to Patty, the love of his life and his partner in every sense of the word. Together they built a life filled with adventure, hard work, and a beautiful family. Don and Patty spent much of their lives working side by side at Milton's Furniture and the rest of their time was dedicated to their family.
He was an incredible father to Jennifer and Jamie, always offering guidance, support, encouragement, and unconditional love. His daughters knew they could count on him for anything, and he took great pride in the women they became.
Over the last eight years, nothing brought Don more joy than being "Grandpa" to his four grandchildren. Luke and Kyle treasured their time with him at the family farm, where they spent countless hours feeding cattle, hunting, fishing, exploring, and simply enjoying being boys together. Kamryn and Paige were the light of his life—his special girls, affectionately known as his "Miss Americas." He loved spending time with them at the beach, making memories at the lake, and pulling them behind the boat with a smile as big as theirs.
Smithville has lost one of its most recognizable citizens. There will never be another Don Mutschink. The loss of his presence will be deeply felt by his family, friends, and the entire community. Though our hearts are broken, we are grateful for the years we shared with him and the example he set for all of us.
Family and friends meant everything to him, in return we cherished him dearly. He loved with his whole heart. His memory will live on through the stories we tell, the lessons he taught us, and the love he leaves behind.
Services are being held privately at this time. A celebration of life will be planned around Don’s 70th birthday in September.
